UP here among the Swiss mountains, in the green valley of Kandersteg, one is very remote from the fuss and hurry of the world. Yet, from where I sit in the flower-decked balcony of this Châlet, I can see the flags of twenty nations waving above the tents, and the camp fires of some three thousand young men gathered there.

Within the next several hours of my writing this a few hundred, or perhaps a few thousand, people will comment on this Manifesto written by Seth Godin .

Godin is a leading voice in what he characterizes as ’the new industrial revolution'.

Godin’s main assertion is that the way we communicate, relate and do business is undergoing total reinvention. As an example you are reading what I am writing right now. You can talk back to me and, simultaneously, to an audience of several hundred others.

It has possibly hardly struck many a Scoutmaster that in his work with his Troop the results are extending far beyond his comparatively limited area, that his efforts are being watched, results noted, and his example followed by others in countries across the sea. But so it is; and out of such beginnings an international sympathy and understanding is growing up. Many excellent movements have been thought of and urged upon the world for all they were worth — but in spite of the pressing they have not appealed so widely as their promoters had hoped and have ended in smoke.

Taking Your Place in the World Scouting Movement

Steve Fox’s list of roles and responsibilities in Scouting spans five decades. From his boyhood home in Maryland, to college in Indiana and Illinois, as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand, and during eight tours of duty with the Foreign Service in East and South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa Scouting has continued to be a big part of his life.

Steve was generous enough to write this article and share some important thoughts and resources to help us all take our place in the world Scouting movement. Our Scouts are already connected to the world in very practical ways; they wear a T-shirt from Guatemala, ride in a car from Japan, listen to music by a British band on a portable device designed in Korea, manufactured in China with parts from Thailand, packaged in Mexico, and marketed by an American advertising agency.

MY recent tour round the world showed me how strong is already that feeling of brotherhood throughout our Movement.

Whether it was in Africa or Australia, Canada or New Zealand, America or Malta, Scouts felt that they were with and of us in the parent Movement at home, and I was impressed with the idea that, if this sentiment were only promoted, it would mean an immense deal for the strengthening of the bonds of our Empire, and even beyond that, for the assurance of peace in the world through a better understanding and fellowship between the nations.

THE different foreign countries — some twelve there are — which have adopted Scouting for their boys are now forming a friendly alliance with us for mutual interchange of views, correspondence, and visits, and thereby to promote a closer feeling of sympathy between the rising generations.

Group Air Travel - A Saga

In August fifteen of our Scouts and leaders are off to visit Kandersteg International Scout Center in Switzerland. We started planning and raising money last spring. Lots of research has gone into constructing a budget, planning the trip and making reservations.

There is very little reliable information to be found about group air travel and the rules seem to change pretty regularly. In the hopes that I may be able to save anyone planning group air travel some time and trouble I’ll tell you the story of our quest to fly to Switzerland.

Kandersteg International Scout Center

Kandersteg is a picture postcard town in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland that is home to Kandersteg International Scout Center (KISC).

Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world KISC hosts thousands of visiting Scouts each summer.

After a year of planning, fundraising, meeting and researching our crew of fifteen experienced ten unforgettable days where we explored, made new friends and enjoyed the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of Scouting.

Polish Scout, Resistance Fighter

History Julian Kulski was a Polish Boy Scout when the Nazis invaded his nation in 1939. He was only 10 years old when the war began.

After the invasion the Nazis directed that all schools be closed and that any patriotic clubs and organizations be disbanded under penalty of death.

Concerned about his son’s safety, Kulski’s father urged him to move in with his Scoutmaster, Ludwik Berger, who later revealed the existence of a secret military organization, the Union of Armed Resistance.
