Good podcast, Clarke. I really like the new blog. I am having a bit of problem with the streaming podcast, but I think that it’s my old browser (old WinXP about to be upgraded to Win7).
SM Conferences.
1. I ask a fair number of questions about scout skills in my conferences. The purpose is to test the boy leadership in the troop! It’s not to rattle the Scout. They know that. My Star – Eagle Scouts are supposed to be leaders and supposed to be teaching the younger Scouts. The thing that I keep saying to them is that they are to lead, train and inspire Scouts to attain First Class rank. That’s their job. They teach the skills and sign off the Scouts books. I want to know how they are doing.
2. I like your words about encouragement. Vitally important to a young Scout.
3. Scout Spirit. I usually have the Scout pick two or three points of the Scout Law and tell me how they have lived that out at home or school or with their friends. I get really great answers most of the time.
4. Tenderfoot to First Class conferences are usually about 20 minutes. I cannot have a conference in 5 minutes. We chat about a bunch of stuff.
5. Star to Eagle are usually 20 to 40 minutes at least. Life Scout is usually the longest. I usually introduce the Life Scout to some details about earning his Eagle and ask him about his goals. If he is an older Scout we sometimes even talk about the life goals question from the Eagle Application. Star Scout conference we spend some time talking about leadership and what the Scout thinks it means for him and his relation to the troop.
6. I always ask the Scout to tell me how the troop is doing and what the committee and the Scoutmaster staff could do to help the Scouts.
7. We always set a goal (date) for the next rank and he writes the date in his book next to the next rank. I usually start each conference asking the Scout how he did on his goal and what he thinks about that.
8. I always have lots of questions in a conference and the Scouts almost always have good answers. We have some great conversations. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t do it quicker.
9. I rarely interact directly with Scouts who aren’t in leadership positions (SPL, PL) in the troop and the conference is my time to chat. YMMV.
