Clarke,
Thanks for taking my question on the podcast. Based on your response, and Larry’s response above, I should just relax and let the program do it’s thing.
We do have an annual plan, and have ways to get the new scouts plugged in and active. Several of the youth leaders are stepping up to take on troop guide positions and are starting to plan out what they want to start teaching the new guys.
We’ll let the patrol thing work itself out and see how the new guys integrate into the troop, and if they want to stick together or fan out and join with the older guys.
I was talking with a couple ASMs about our tidal wave, and we realized that there must be a reason all these Webelos picked our troop – all had visited one or more troop meetings and several had been on District camp-outs with us. They obviously like what they saw and want to be part of it.
Oh, and when I called I was thinking we’d be getting 16-20 new scouts. Turns out I didn’t get accurate numbers from the packs – we’ll probably end up with 27 new members.
Thanks again for the advice. Whatever happens, I’m sure we’ll have a good time!
Dude, what happened to the podcast logo with the little “play” button? The new link started a Windows Media Player on my machine. It worked, but I like the old interface better, as it plays in my browser.
RE: Webelos Tidal Wave
Very good thoughts on overall philosophy. So how does it actually get done. Well, if the Troop has an annual plan and has been working the plan since last May, then no problem. What are we doing in March? Campout? Camporee? Klonkike derby? etc. Now we know what we need to get done before the campout.
The patrol leaders need to get those new Scouts ready for their first campout.
There are several months worth of programming right there in that one statement. Teach them how to make pancakes. Bring in tents and practice setting up tents. Knots. Learn the joining requirements. How to pack. What to bring. Patrol leaders can actually bring their gear bags in and demonstrate how they do it. I like my patrols to be as busy as possible during meetings getting ready for activities.
