What age are they when they start scouting, Cubs, I mean? Here in Argentina, the younger section spans between 7 and 11 but it’s only one section. Then, they go into the scout section, (bw 11 and 14), “caminantes” (i.e. venturers) from 14 to 17 and rovers bw 17 and 21
For us non Americans. Where does the name Webelos come from?
Is it an acronym?
Is it some obscure native American animal that I’ve never heard of?
This has been bugging me for ages.
Thanks,
Luigi
The webelo is a small chipmunk-like mammal that lives in the forests of the Appalachian Mountains. The BSA adopted the name for it’s oldest Cub Scout section in 1952 because it’s frenetic movements and high-pitched call bore a similarity to the actions and voices of boys in that section of Scouting.
Sound unlikely? It is. Actually it is an acronym WE‘ll BE LOyal Scouts – Webelos
What age span are you referring to?
Webelos are usually around 8-11 years old, They are in the Webelos section for the fourth and fifth grades.
