I don’t think “counseling” helps much. Distraction is a much better solution. A busy Scout is a happy Scout. An unengaged, bored Scout is a trouble makeing/homesick/annoying Scout. It’s ok if the Scout wants to talk it out with someone but otherwise it’s best to leave them to work it out. They always do.
Great comments on what is a challenge we all face in scouting – homesickness. I was quite the homesick scout at first and when I grew out of it I realized that was a two part foe. One part was simply missing those we loved. I think I grew out of that as I came to realize that no matter how much I missed my family, I was going to see them in just a few hours (or days) no matter what. The other half was fear. Mostly fear of the unknown. As I became a proficient scout, that fear went away as there were fewer and fewer unknowns to be afraid of.
I’d like to hear from others on whether being counseled by an adult or another scout is the most effective.
Wow, Clark, When I posted my comment about show 21 I just hoped one of your listeners would leave a few words of advice and encouragement. Imagine how surprised I was to hear my name and my letter on your show. I am honored.
BTW, your bit about Brick Mason taking the scouts hiking would not seem so funny if it had not happened to me several times. Unfortunately my 15 year old just said, “Dad, you are slowing us down!”
I love your podcast and find myself in complete agreement with your tips, hints and suggestions. Keep up the great work!
