25 Skills Every Man Should Know
Popular Mechanics has published an article entitled 25 Skills Every Man Should Know : “…we spent weeks fine-tuning our list of “25 Skills Every Man Should Know,” debating over whether certain items were too basic, too challenging or just too obscure. You can find a full how-to rundown of each one in the October issue.”
I looked at the list and found specific corresponding rank or merit badge requirements that presented Scouts the opportunity to learn these skills.
Seven skills are not specifically addressed (in red below). Four are learned by Scouts who reach First Class rank.
Three are covered by Auto Mechanics Merit Badge Three are covered by Computers Merit Badge Two are covered by Home Repairs Merit Badge Two are covered by Canoeing Merit Badge The remaining four are covered by Fishing, Rifle Shooting, Painting and Cycling Merit Badges.
Naturally these skills are restricted to ‘hard’ skills (those that are demonstrably hands-on) and would not represent those required to be a comprehensive human being. Even so Scouting comes out way ahead of the curve in developing a competent adult.
