Like Walter I accumulated a collection of Scoutmaster Handbooks. From the very first edition to the last they were uniformly mediocre at best. Both Walter and I agree that the most useful offical guide to how Scout troops work remains the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook – but that the first volume of the Troop leader Guidebook is a very valuable resource. Although the guidebook is only available as a three-hole-punched paper edition (provide your own binder) the appendix of useful forms and reference information is available as a PDF document here . Inexpensive copies of Bill Hillcourt’s Patrol Leader Handbook are almost always available on eBay Walter and I both love Hillcourt’s Scout Field Book (originally intended to be the Scout Handbook!) also available on eBay I recommend these books to you as historic references that have many practical applications today BUT; it should go without saying that these older publications reflect some polices, procedures, and practices that have wisely been deprecated or updated over the years, In This Podcast It dawned on him… [0:22] Intro [1:13] Walter Underwood and myself review the first volume of the Troop Leader Guidebook.
