Dude!! Are you sick again?? Or is that just allergies. Surely wasn’t that Alpine air.
Nice chat with Peter. Discussions like this really help to put in perspective the fact that we are part of a worldwide movement and that Scouting is both different and very much the same in other parts of the world.
You and Peter made a great point that if at all possible, every Scout who can should have some kind of an international experience. One way that Peter mentioned is Jamboree On the Air, which I’ll be participating in next month (okay, taking apart my own ham station, hauling it out to camp, setting up the shelter, putting ropes in trees to pull up antennas, and hooking everything up). We hope to make contact with other stations across the country and have already set up a contact, band conditions permitting, with another Scouter-ham in England to talk with their Scouts. More information can be found here on the WOSM site and also on the BSA site.
Those of us fortunate enough to live near an international border can visit Camporees in another country. Our troop has regularly participated in events in Ontario, Canada, about an hour’s drive from here.
Finally, the Michigan International Camporee is held every four years in northern Michigan. It brings together Scouts from over 20 countries for a week of camping and fellowship. Local troops host the overseas Scouts for a week prior to the Camporee, then travel with them to the camp. While this year’s US contingent troop list is most likely full, there’s always 2016 to look forward to.
