A lot of our Scouts are subject to many demands on their time…
.. and some are under extreme pressure from their parents. What if one of our Scouts wants to quit because they say they have no time for Scouts? Scouting ought to be challenging, but not impossible, nor should it become something stressful – Scouting is about adventure, fun and spending time with your friends!
In this podcast I’ll talk about how we can help Scouts manage their commitments and figure out how to continue to have the adventure and fun Scouting offers. I’ll also offer some advice to a Scouter who was nominated for the Order of the Arrow yet feels they can’t take on the whole thing if their son is not involved.

Clarke,
Great podcast. I like your hypothetical conversation with the Scout. Spot on. Two related thoughts: it sounds to me like that Scout’s troop has rigid attendance rules, which you discussed recently too. This sems like another good reason not to be rigid about that. Second, you were talking about the Scout, so you didn’t mention that there is a great benefit to the troop when boys like this stay in. Older experienced boys make the troop run better even if they’re not always there. And I would venture (no pun intended) to say that an approach like this is far more important to retaining older Scouts than cool high adventure trips. It certainly worked in my troop – the troop doubled in size in the last 5 years with no change in recruiting and minimal high adventure. (We do do Philmont every 2-3 years, but that is relatively new.)
The podcast doesn’t seem to be playing but the first 28 seconds.
