Been away for a good time. I am now the Scoutmaster and more busy than ever. Keep doing this great work, and I am still working on the old podcasts!
I think you are skewing Bill Hilcourt’s message to fit what is currently being supported by BSA. He didn’t say that the outdoor experience and mastery was optional. He said it was a necessary path to achieving the goal of being a prepared, responsible citizen. That is the DNA of the organization. The laboratory of the outdoors was where he said Scouting occurred. That is why he came back and why he rewrote the handbook. The outdoors is our Source Code. The goal of “The Aims” is what will happen if we stay true to the Source Code.
Dale – I do not support or endorse all that the BSA does by a long shot. I think we’ve significantly strayed from the “page nine” model, so much so that Scouting in many places does not resemble anything that Bill wrote about. What I am doing, though, is trying to light a candle as opposed to talking about what is wrong, it’s a tough needle to thread!
