Can a Scoutmaster save their brains by using their ears?
Baden-Powell thought so! In this podcast we’ll explain and discuss the art of Socratic Scouting. I’ll also answer email questions about merit badge blue cards (there’s always a question about them!) and who can or should be conducting Scoutmaster Conferences.

Great podcast! I am an attorney and was very much inspired to go to law school after watching the movie. Not many non-lawyers (and not even many lawyers) get what the Socratic method really is. One must sacrifice showing everyone how much he thinks he knows (which is such a thrill for those of us with big egos) in exchange for the slower, more risky approach of letting the student learn for himself. Are we here to “get the job done and get it done right” or are we building character? Thanks, Clarke for keeping on this point, we so easily forget it.
Thanks for the podcast. I used the Socratic Method last night at our troop meeting. We’re working on our First Aid merit badge and I was helping the Scouts treat puncture wounds and remove fish hooks. I’m the surgical supply coordinator at my hospital and got my suture rep to donate small blocks of fake “skin” they use for demonstrations.
“Why does the hook get stuck?”
“Is there an animal with a barb?”
“What will happen if you yank it out?”
Etcetera. The new scouts were excited to show they knew the answers. The older scouts were excited to show they knew it all. :). Better yet, it sucked up 20 mins!
Outstanding podcast Clarke!
