I recently listened to this episode on a trip I took to the Twin Cities. I really enjoyed the interview and the stories shared by Mike Malone. I look forward to an actually book being published.
Keep up the good work Clarke.
To me, an Eagle scout is a persistent individual. He has spent three or four years or more, done everything with the troop practically that there is to do, and reached this rank as a goal. In the few Eagle conferences I have had, I have praised the scout for doing scouting longer than he has done anything else in his young life, except school. I then have to remind the kid that there is a scouting life after Eagle, and please don’t quit.
What is an Eagle Scout? A young man who earns the Eagle Scout award!
That whole discussion is way over my head (I’m a life long Life Scout 🙂 ). I’m a pretty simple guy. I like that he essentially said that the Eagle award shapes the man more than the boy must have certain attributes before he “earns” the award. Or something like that.
Agreed – do the requirements, pass a board of review and that’s it – Eagle Scout.
Since people can and do argue over what constitutes and Eagle Scout I wanted Mike’s perspective. What I took from his answer was it is an indication of potential more than an indication of what someone has accomplished.
