Kandersteg is a picture postcard town in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland that is home to Kandersteg International Scout Center (KISC).
Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world KISC hosts thousands of visiting Scouts each summer. After a year of planning, fundraising, meeting and researching our crew of fifteen experienced ten unforgettable days where we explored, made new friends and enjoyed the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of Scouting. I am still processing and recovering and accounting; a process that will take some days. Here’s some initial findings:
What we did
– Hiked some incredible trails.
– Visited wonderful places.
– Met Scouts and Scouters from around the world.
What we learned
– Scouting remains a strong, positive world movement.
– The scale of the landscape was inspiring, baffling, daunting and rewarding.
– People from other places, cultures and traditions share more in common than they differ.
– Switzerland is a wonderful, welcoming, expensive, sometimes puzzling but ultimately wonderful place to visit.
All of this confirms something that we all know – no matter what your socio-economic background, no matter what you think is possible or impossible if you have some vision, some chutzpah and a good measure of dogged determination you and your Scouts can go anywhere and do anything you set your minds to do.
