Gutter spikes (seven inch long aluminum nails used to secure gutters to a house) make inexpensive, lightweight, strong, tent stakes. They are available at home centers, hardware stores and lumber yards.
I special ordered a box of 250 at the local lumber yard, enough to outfit all of our tents two or three times over for much less cost than ‘real’ tent stakes.

FYI – Aluminum gutter nails are a favorite at Philmont to save weight and they work well. One warning though the aluminum gutter nails are somewhat soft and will bend with use. They are a good option for back packing but traditional steel stakes may work better for traditional campsite tents. There are large steel nails available for landscape timbers. That may be a more durable option for campsites.
Great idea!
