Some requirements, like First Class Rank Requirement 1a, can be confusing;
Since joining, participate in 10 separate troop/patrol activities, six of which include overnight camping. These 10 activities do not include troop or patrol meetings. On at least five of the six campouts, spend the night in a tent that you pitch or other structure that you help erect (such as a lean-to, snow cave, or tepee).
I created a simple logic chart to determine if a given activity fulfils First Class Rank Requirement 1a;
The chart is available to download as a pdf document below.
If you are curious about my take on the new rank requirements I have a series of posts that begin here.

The depiction for the question “Was the activity a troop or patrol meeting?” is a bit confusing with three lines coming out of the box (two of which link to “No”). Yes, I understand what it is depicting, but I think it would help to have arrowheads on all of the lines.
I can already hear a couple of questions that some of our Scouts will ask:
“What about if I sleep out under the stars with no tent at all?” (As I read the requirement, that’s fine but it won’t count toward the minimum of 5 in a tent or other structure. Does that sound right?)
“What about if I sleep in a hammock that I put up?” (That sounds like a gray area to me — if the scout puts up his own hammock, is that an “other structure”?)
The hammock is easy – “other structure that you help erect”, under the stars is a little more difficult to parse. I’d say it qualifies. The whole idea of the overnight camping specifically in a tent or “other structure you helped erect” is to assure Scouts are getting out of doors.
I think the flow chart is in correct. The activity should be with the troop should be the first question. According to your chart camping with the family would count for a scout.
Great chart…. I wonder if the first box would not be better worded: “At the time were you a member of a boy scout troop”, as the requirement starts with “Since joining….” Love your stuff, glad your still at it!
Thanks other Dave, I fixed that!
