Behind the Curtain at

Yesterday things were humming at the technical annex where we were pushing buttons and throwing switches feverishly trying to fix things.

Good news: the site has had a pretty healthy increase in traffic over the past couple of  months and it was time to upgrade our hosting service to accommodate this traffic.
Less than good news: this upgrade makes the site inaccessible for a few hours, I apologize for the inconvenience you may have experienced in getting to the site.

Slightly technical explanation   using a typical hosting service a website is sharing a server with about a hundred other sites. This is fine for most websites or blogs that get no more than 2-300 visits a day (happy to report that we get about ten times that on average). If you get a lot of visits your site gets throttled down making it load slower or (gulp) not at all. An upgraded server hosts fewer sites but allows for more traffic. It also costs about twice as much! If you are so inclined and would like to help support the server upgrade go here.

I’ve been using Bluehost for the past few years and have been completely satisfied with the service. They walked me through the upgrade yesterday and remained patient and polite through the whole process. If you are looking for hosting services I recommend checking out Bluehost, they are reliable and helpful folks.
